I’m not usually a huge fan of these currently fashionable four-part TV dramas as they often veer into the absurd, but I decided to give this one a chance as it was based on true events and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
Anna Maxwell Martin’s portrayal of the main character was exceptional and despite being the ‘victim’ she came across as an extremely difficult person to dislike and didn’t do much to help herself
Overall it was a bit choppy, had to cover a long period of time, and some of the other portrayals of the minor characters were a bit wooden, but it didn’t spoil the fun for me.
I thought it was excellent television, and despite my negative opinion of Balmer, Sweeney is clearly the monster here
It will be interesting to watch the documentary with the real Delia Balmer to see if she comes across as as sensitive and abrasive as the dramatization portrays her – which she was even before her ordeal.
